Nutria or Coypu
Myocastor coypus

The nutria’s native home is South America, but due to escapes and introductions, feral populations now occur in Europe, Asia and North America.  The typical lifespan for this semiaquatic mammal is only 6 years.  Nutria look very similar to the beaver with the exception of the tail – nutrias’ tails are long and rounded as opposed to wide and flat.

Conservation Status – Nutrias are able to reproduce as early as 9 months of age, producing 2-3 litters a year of 2-11 young.  Due to this, their status is listed as least concern.
