Keeper For A Day

All Zookeeper for a Day Participants

Arrive at 8:00 a.m. to meet the keeper and get ready to go to work.  You may be asked to lift and carry tools, animal food, water and other items.  Be ready to get dirty!  You will have the opportunity to interact with other keepers in this program as you help them in their various duties. All participants must be 15 years of age or older. Program costs: Members–Full day-$300, Half day-$150; Non-Members–Full day-$350, Half day-$175

Texas Carnivores

 Otters, Mountain Lions, and Bears! Oh My! These are just a few of the species you will learn about during this amazing shadowing experience.  The Brazos River is home to many different vegetational zones and an abundance of wildlife. Spend the day assist the keepers in caring for endangered species found right in our back yard!

Example of a Texas Carnivore Zookeeper’s Day:

8:00 a.m.  Arrive and meet the keeper

8:15 a.m.  Get ready to work

  • Gather morning diet and enrichment
  • Clean and prep exhibits
  • Observe morning training and husbandry routine
  • Clean night houses

12:00 p.m.  Lunch (provided for full day participants only)

1:30 p.m.  Provide lunches for bears and shift otters

2:00 p.m.  Prepare animal diets

3:00 p.m. Work on projects and/or enrichment construction

4:15 pm.   Gather evening diets and enrichment, prepare night houses for closing

5:30 p.m.  End of an exciting day with Cameron Park Zoo’s Texas Carnivore Area


Birds & Small Mammals

Explore the fascinating world of birds and small mammals at Cameron Park Zoo by assisting in their care.  Discover species you may have never seen before.  By the end of the day you’ll sure to have some new friends!

Example of a Birds & Small Mammals Zookeeper Day:

8:00 a.m.  Arrive and meet the keeper

8:15 a.m.  Get ready to work

  • Gather animal diets
  • Feed the pelicans
  • Clean and feed animals in South American exhibit
  • Feed raptors

12:00 p.m.  Lunch (provided for full day participants only)

1:15 p.m.  Assist in animal training

2:00 p.m.  Work on projects and/or enrichment construction

3:30 p.m.  Closing procedure

  • Feed evening diets
  • Secure animals

5:00 p.m.  End of an exciting day with Cameron Park Zoo’s Bird & Small Mammal Department


Reptiles & Amphibians

 Discover the amazing diversity of reptiles and amphibians at Cameron Park Zoo.  Learn all about these animals from around the world as you help care for them

Note:  This program will not include interaction with venomous or potentially dangerous reptiles.

8:00 a.m.  Arrive and meet the keeper

8:15 a.m.  Get ready to work

  • Clean exhibit glass
  • Prepare diets
  • Clean and feed Galapagos tortoises
  • Clean and feed nonvenomous animals

12:00 p.m.  Lunch (provided for full day participants only)

1:15 p.m.  Assist in animal training

2:00 p.m.  Work on projects and/or enrichment construction

4:30 p.m.  Closing procedure

5:00 p.m.  End of an exciting day with Cameron Park Zoo’s Reptile & Amphibian Department


Elephants

 Everyone knows the adage that an elephant never forgets…. We guarantee this is an experience you will never forget! Elephants aren’t the only animals you will discover on this journey; this area also includes Southern White Rhinos, African Lion, and Sumatran Tiger.  Spend the day with the keepers helping create enrichment, prepare diets, and observing training sessions.

8:15 a.m.  Get ready to work

  • Gather morning diet and enrichment
  • Clean and prep exhibits
  • Observe elephant training and morning husbandry routine
  • Clean night houses

12:00 p.m.  Lunch (provided for full day participants only)

1:30 p.m.  Shift Tigers

2:00 p.m.  Work on projects and/or enrichment construction

3:00 p.m.  Rhino training session and encounter

3:30 pm.   Prepare animal diets

4:15 pm.   Gather evening diets and enrichment, prepare night houses for closing

5:30 p.m.  End of an exciting day with Cameron Park Zoo’s Elephant Area


Hoof Stock

Join the herd! From Masai and Reticulated giraffe to White-tailed deer this area has lots of up-close encounters to offer.  Keeper shadows will have the opportunity to learn about the Cameron Park Zoos diverse Ungulate collection. Assist with feeding the Giraffe, shifting the Bison, and much more.

  • Gather morning diet and enrichment
  • Clean and prep exhibits, including a deer encounter
  • Observe morning training and husbandry routine
  • Clean night houses

12:00 p.m.  Lunch (provided for full day participants only)

1:30 p.m.  Shift and clean Bison exhibit

2:00 p.m.  Prepare animal diets

2:30 p.m.  Giraffe encounter and feeding

3:00 p.m. Work on projects and/or enrichment construction

4:15 pm.   Gather evening diets and enrichment, prepare night houses for closing

5:30 p.m.  End of an exciting day with Cameron Park Zoo’s Hoof stock Area

 


Fish & Invertebrates

Get ready to explore the fascinating world of fish and invertebrates with the keepers at Cameron Park Zoo.  You will find out what it takes to maintain an aquarium, the requirements for a healthy coral reef and will meet some of the terrestrial invertebrates who live at the Zoo.

8:15 a.m.  Get ready to work

  • Open marine and freshwater aquariums
  • Water changes
  • Observe a Flower Garden Banks dive
  • Feed animals and prepare diets

12:00 p.m. Lunch (provided for full day participants only)

1:15 p.m. Afternoon activities

  • Koi pond and garden maintenance
  • Tank maintenance
  • Work on projects and/or enrichment items
  • Take care of invertebrate collection

4:15 p.m. Closing procedures

  • Clean acrylics
  • Check sump pumps
  • Feed heron
